The 6th Annual IVC/SC Student Research Symposium will be held at Irvine Valley College on Saturday, November 4, 2017, from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (exact time TBD contingent upon number of admitted applicants).

To apply to present your research at the symposium, submit a proposal abstract of no more than 300 words (not including title) describing your provisional, ongoing, or completed research. Research projects must be mentored by one or more faculty members. A notification email will be sent to you and to the listed mentors when the abstract is received. Students may apply for a maximum of one poster presentation plus one individual oral presentation plus one group oral presentation. No two presentations may be on the same topic. Submitted abstracts may be in the following formats:  doc, docx, txt or rtf.  Do not submit a pdf; these can cause technical problems at this site.

Information in the abstract should include the following:

  • an original and informative title;
  • a description of the research topic, question, hypothesis, and/or purpose;
  • an explanation of the research methods used;
  • a discussion of the implications/conclusions drawn or anticipated;
  • other information deemed relevant by the applicant;
  • Works Cited/Reference list containing between 3 and 5 relevant and scholarly sources and formatted according to MLA or APA format (as appropriate for the discipline).
The abstract should be double-spaced in Times New Roman 12-point font.  The Works Cited/Reference list should be included on the same document as the abstract but will not be counted against the 300-word limit.

The submission deadline is Friday, October 13 at 11:59 p.m.  Applicants will be notified whether they have been accepted by Sunday, October 22.  Conference participation is limited to students currently enrolled at Irvine Valley College or Saddleback College in a minimum of 3 units with a GPA of 2.0 or above.  Please address questions to kryals@ivc.edu or arosenberg@saddleback.edu.

Note: Students who intend to apply to the SCCUR conference with the same project should follow more closely the SCCUR abstract guidelines available at http://www.sccur.org/guidelines.html. This site is also helpful for students who want to know the specific expectations for research and abstracts according to different disciplines.

The 6th Annual IVC/SC Student Research Symposium will be held at Irvine Valley College on Saturday, November 4, 2017, from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (exact time TBD contingent upon number of admitted applicants). We will need both general volunteers to help with check-in, etc., and volunteer moderators to attend the sessions to help keep time and manage Q&A periods for presenters. No knowledge of subject area is necessary to be a moderator. This is a great job for beginners!
